This Standard defines Active Format Description (AFD) and Bar Data for origination and conveyance throughthe production and distribution processes for standard definition or high definition television signals. AFD andBar Data are intended to be ultimately broadcast with the video signals that they describe, thereforereferences to emission and DTV receivers are included to ensure compatibility between the origination of theAFD and Bar Data and its ultimate use.

Associated standards define how this information is placed into ancillary data packets and is KLV coded asSMPTE metadata. Annex C shows the relationship among the standards.
